Summary:
Darn good boot. I bought it a year and a half ago and have used it in the Cascade's, Sierra's and Adirondacks they're great for 30-50 snow and ice routes. My feet overheat in them on the approach - but my feet sweat like fish to begin with. They're pretty decent on Vertical ice too. All around a good boot, and a great deal if your paying the sale prices.

Price Paid:  $150.00 at Sportsbasement.com

Summary:
I got these for my trip to Washington State's Glacier Peak and Mount Rainier last summer (Aug. 2000), and they've worked out really well. I didn't have enough time to really break 'em in before my trip, and still they treated my feet right, with only a couple of hot spots during the trip that moleskin easily prevented from developing into blisters. My climbing buddies, all of whom were much more experienced, were gobsmacked. (Some credit for my comfort also goes to the wonderful Smartwool mountaineering socks I wore.) I've been using these as winter boots back home in Chicago, and by next summer, they're going to be perfectly broken in for my second attempt at Rainier. They're beatifully constructed. The leather outside is boomproof and inside, it's cushy. A nice alternative if you can't pay up for the oh-so-sweet K2 or K3 from La Sportiva. But backpackers beware: Though this boot is a hell of a lot more versitile and comfortable than any plastic boot, it's no an ordinary hiker. The full-length steel shank, great if you're wearing crampons, makes the Pinnacle's soles really freaking stiff. So they're great for mixed-terrain climbs like Rainier, but they're pointlessly stiff and heavy if you're not going to see any ice or snow.
