Any sub $250 shell is going to wear after moderate use. Proper care is essential to guarnateeing longevity, so complaining about a jacket purchased 4 years ago is absured. Marmot has great customer service when it comes to wear and tear, even when they're dealing with uninformed customers. Use a cleaner and tech-wash twice a year and the jacket will hold up. I prefer Nikwax but there are several companies out there with the same type of product. I use my jacket year round, tret it when the arms begin to absorb moisture, and am confident that it will hold up for another 5 years. Customer Service keep 'em in the know Similar Products Used: arc'teryx, north face, columbia, sorel |

If you want to keep dry, buy this jacket…and an umbrella and two cans of Scotch Guard (old recipe). This jacket will not keep the rain out. Last week, I walked 45 mins. to work in a moderate rain and was soaked. Later, under no illusion but having nothing else, I hiked Ben Nevis in the rain and needless to say, I was wet. I guess that’s why they call it the precip—because you can feel the rain right on your skin as if you were wearing nothing t all. |

I purchased a Precip jacket at REI for my son to wear at Philmont. He didn't test the jacket in rain before taking it to Philmont. Big mistake. It rained daily and the first time he wore it the rain soaked through instantly. He got wetter wearing the jacket than if he went without. Another man backpacking with us had the same jacket and had the same problem. He had worn his precip jacket one other time before coming to Philmont and it didn't keep him dry then either. He called Marmot and they said that the jacket rainproof coating must not have been activated. He was instructed by customer service to put the jacket in the dryer. Supposedly the heat from the dryer would activate the waterproof lining. After doing this at home he tested the jacket and he said it seemed to be repelling water so he brought it to Philmont. Turns out the the jacket didn't repel the rain instead soacked it up.

I agree with many of the reviews on here - this jacket is not waterproof. I bought it originally for a trip to Costa Rica, but luckily did not see much rain. But then I took it out during a downpour in Chicago and got soaked. This was my third Marmot product and probably my last, as all three did not live up to my expectations, especially when compared to other brands out there. |

This jacket is NOT WATERPROOF, I am a park ranger in Tennessee and this jacket was issued as an uniform item. I was using the jacket one day on boat patrol and got soaked in a heavy rain. I am back to using an old gortex jacket we received years back. |

I bought this product recently and am very impressed with the breathability and function. It's light enough for summer hikes and being outside, and it is waterproof. The sealed seams do their job, and pit vents help cool me off during exertion. |

Bought this jacket a few years ago as a closeout. It is great as a spring skiing shell. It has served me well through many a Rocky Mountian back pack downpour. Last year I did a 10 day trek at Philmont NM and the jacket performed like a champ through many days of continuous rain. I sometimes think the complaints are related to condensation. The pit vents help greatly, but this jacket will condense perspiration during exertion. Last year I struggled through an avalanche roll out, scraping through trees and downfall and this jacket doesn't even show a scratch. It is a trooper! I bought it on a recommendation from an avid outdoorsman who uses one as his shell. Now, mine is starting to absorb water and I'm looking for a fix. I'll call customer service, but I've already gotton my money out of this soldier. I will buy another (on sale). All these type jackets are overpriced at list. Similar Products Used: Golite Paclite - about the same quality although the packlite is "noisy" whereas the Prcip is silent. |

Durability is the key issue with this jacket. I have owned it for a year and a half and this jacket is no longer waterproof. I bought it because it was light and had some nice features to it. However I am very unimpressed with how long it has lasted me. For the price I payed I would have expected to be able to rely on it for longer than this. If you want an around town jacket than this on is fine, but do not trust your life to it. |
