My family has had this tent for 29 years. Yep - 29 years. My (now 56) year old mom just gave it to me, and she bought it when she was 27. It's still great. It's not watertight, and the bottom seam tape needs a repair (an easy fix). It's durable as all hell, though.

I said 'car camper' because that's my main method, but also backpack and kayak camp. Obviously this wouldn't be the tent I'd use for packing or paddling since I'm usually solo, as I think it comes in around 4.5#, although for 2 people to split the weight, it would be fine. I live in Minneapolis and and camp extensively from April through October. This tent is the best piece of equipment ever!! Water tight, even during the four-day deluge in Fall of '07, camping on the Root River, which unfortunately lead to severe flooding and loss of homes and lives, but I was dry. I've been through lots of rough weather with this over the two yrs I've had it and no probs. In warm weather or on a starry night, it's easy to just reach out a throw back the fly for a breeze or great view of the heavens. Can't comment on two-person factor as I haven't had someone with me in it :-(

Customer Service

I buy most of my gear at REI because of their return policy, however, customer service has never been needed on my half dome. Retail was around $160, but used dividend and 20% coupon.

Bought with bike touring in mind, secondarily for backpacking, for my son''s tour of California. We tested the tent in the store...it held my son on a Z-rest sleeping pad AND his bike AND four panniers AND handlebar bag AND rear-rack bag! It worked out that way in practice on the road too. When windy, the fly must be guyed at the four main points where the fly meets the pole, and to ensure a smooth and wrinkle-free flyguying is needed at the ends and midway between the longest side-span at the loops provided. The fly never touches the tent walls in this improved model. Plenty of ventilation via mesh side walls and peak vents in the new model (Half Dome 2) and the eye-shaped window is sooooooo kewl too. Replace the soft-bendy stakes with MSR or Kelty octagonal stakes. Use Kelty reflective guy lones to avoid tripping at night. Seam-seal the velcro on the fly where it attaches to the poles. Quick, easy pitch, easy to strike. Great golden, blend-in color with a huge REI logo to advertise that you are the common man. With the optional footprint and bug juice, leave the tent body at home for lightweight backpacking. Cheap, well-made, versatile, strong, roomy, great headroom...all for $150...hard to believe, but true!

I have used this tent a few times and I feel that it is decent. My friend actually owns it, but he has had very few problems with it. The stuff sack is falling apart but the tent itself is in good condition. Other than the smaller size, there is not too much to complain about. The light weight makes up for the lost space.
This is a good tent for decent weather and when weight is crucial. However I would not recomend it for car camping or severe weather.

The advantages of this tent are price, you can not beat that price for a decent backpacking tent; ease of setup, I can set this tent up by myself in less then five minutes; weight, 5lbs! for a two man tent with more room than many simliar designs. Now the disadvantages: On my last backpacking trip to Algonquin Provincial Park it rained on us one night for about 5 hours and the tent leaked not through the seams but through the floor! This is the first time I have had this problem and I have had this tent for three years. Number two it is impossible to keep the rain fly from touching the tent wall which allows moisture to transfer through. It is also difficult to guy out the tent so that the side walls are not sagging in on you. My wife feels that the tent is a little small in length and I tend to agree because with both of us in there we end up touching the wall of the tent. The tent also seems to have a bit of a ventalation problem. If you have to sleep with the rain fly on due to questionable weather plan on waking up in a jungle. It does not appear to breath well. Even with all of this said it has been a great first tent. I could not afford much else when I bought it and I can not argue about the performance compared to the price. I know that this is somewhat of a mixed review but I hope it was helpful.

A great tent for the loot. It has many of the same features the higher priced tents have: hot taped fly, alum poles, rip stop nylon, vestibule, very light weight, individual storage sacks and sturdy. Sure it doesn't have the stability of a SD but it is more than adequate for the occassional budget minded backpacker looking for a quality tent. I would be willing to pay a few bucks more if they would put a brow pole above the opening, much like SD's and Moutain Hardwear do on the Orion and Lightwedge 2. It would provide more headroom and a place to store things out of the way, but at a buck and quarter one can't complain much. A very nice tent for someone starting out or for anyone on a budget.

REI has absolutely the BEST customer service in the business. You don't have to deal with manufacturers, just take an REI purchased product to any REI store and they will certainly take care of you.

i just got this tent, but damn, the forst time i went out it was raining. luckily my stuff and i stayed dry, i'm quite impressed with how it's keeping up with being used by college kids repeatedly (we're a little tough on the tent at night) without failure.
