A first-rate product. As you'll see from my other Winston reviews I prefer the old IM6 Winstons for trout fishing, but the BL5 has a faster action that makes it great for longer casts and heavier weight lines. I used this rod for salmon, and for large (8 lb and up) trout in Patagonia and was completely satisfied. Typical Winston high quality, functionality, and good looks.

Customer Service

The best in the business. Be aware that Winston now includes a postage charge, which I don't mind but some might find annoying.

Strength:

Forgiving, excellent craftsmanship.

Weakness:

Too soft for sinking lines.

With a floating line at medium casting distances this rod is a joy. It is easy to control loop size and allows you to make a good presentation with an 8 wt line. If you want to throw heavy sinking lines or heads, I think there are better options. The flex goes well down the shaft of the rod making it hard to give a heavy line much zip.
