my step dad bought me this bag for boy scouts when i was a bear and this bag has held up through the worst weather, i just took this out of my closet for a camp out and it is still in a great condition, the color is a little faded but my sleeping bag fits still and my tent fits comfortably in the given straps at the bottom of the bag. the right pocket is great for a med-kit and eating utensils( i like to keep my matches in there to)the bottom pocket is a great place to keep a sleeping bag and the main pocket is where i kept my cloths. im not sure if the rain guard came with it or if it was boght sepertly but i recommend buying one.ur gunna wanna buy some extra ring's just in case and i some sleeping bags dont fit but i use a smaller mummy bag witch fits fine.

This pack has held up to the rigors of a young scout. It easily adjusts to accomodate his rapid growth and the pockets are roomy enough for him to maintain organization of his gear. He has had no complaints regarding comfort. We have found that his heavier sleeping bag will not fit in the attached straps. We put his sleeping pad there and attached his bag below to the frame with some inexpensive straps I added on. Overall we have been very pleased with this pack.

Great starter pack. I first got one of these when I was in 6th grade (I'm 22 now) and used it weekend backpacking trips every month for almost 4 years straight. It has plently of external pockets to keep your gear organized and accessable, and you can fit long items (camping spades, etc) on the inside of the pack through a side opening in the divider between the top and bottom sections. Access is great (either top or bottom panel) and I was always able to get at my gear quickly.
I wore the pack on a 12 day trek through New Mexico (rockies) with 46lbs in the pack with few problems. Yes, it is not as comfy as an internal, nor is the load as controllable, but it is very modular, and can carry just about anything.
I would rate it high on functionality and quality of build (no break downs), and medium to low on comfort.
For the money you pay (about $100), this pack is great and it is adjustable over a range of torso lengths, so it can grow with younger ones. If you are older, however, I would suggest going with an internal frame pack because they are so much more comfortable in general.

Two quibles-- the sleeping bag attachment straps that come with the pack are way too short- they barely even hold a sleeping pad. Second, the hip belt is very uncomfortable with heavy loads- replace it with their upgrade.
