I believe that this pack is discontinued, but if you see one, grab it! I've done the 120 mile Tour d' Mt. Blanc and some pretty airy Alpine hiking with it, and it's always been stable and comfortable. Yes, it squeaks - my hiking pals and wife always knew where I was.

This is an outstanding piece of equipment. I lived out of it for literaly thousands of miles across Alaska, Canada, and the states. Starting from Anchorage I was in NY before the web started giving out, and that was the only issue I experienced. Investing in a fresh one to do South America in this fall.

I have been using my REI Wonderland for about 10 years or more and still love it. I have tried some of the internal frame packs and they are not as comfortable for me.

I enjoy this pack alot I have never used an internal pack so i cant compare but I have taken this pack to philmont; colorodo; big bend; and many many weekend camping trips. The only problem I have with the equipment are the support poles inside the pack they have become slightly bent and dont always stay in place. also they are a little sharp if you loose the rubber endings as I have...Im looking at upgrading to an osprey but untill then this pack has been my old faithful!

ive used my wonderland for 3 or 4 years now and its worked out really well. the only thing that has ever happened to it is that i popped a pin off once i have a small hole in the middle of the backside of the fabric (how it got there i have no idea). this pack holds everything i have needed on my week long treks. i particuarly like the pocket on top of the flap. its perfect for my platypus. my only complaint about the pack is that the piece of fabric that seperates the lower part of the pack (which i generally use for clothes) from the top part (which is the majority of the pack. used for food, tarp, etc.) has a zipper and tends to unzip and things in the top part of the pack can fall through if not fully packed

I used the wonderland backpack to hike the Wonderland trail around Mt. Rainier - 14 days with 9 of them having rain, snow, sleet, or hail. The pack held up remarkably well and kept all my gear dry (with a pack cover, of course). No complaints and I carry it on all my overnight expeditions.

Customer Service

REI - the best.

Old REI external frame pack from 30 years ago. Great huge pack with a pocket at the bottom for the sleeping bag so it isn't just hanging out there.

This is my first backpack. I did try others , but decided for external cause it was better volume/dollar value.
Took this backpack to South Rim trip at Big Bend. It did great! I didn't have any problems that the others here epxerienced. I carried at least 3 gallons of water , 2 person tent, 2 sleeping pads, sleeping bag, lot's of food, cooking kit, clothing, misc. I didn't experience any shifting or instability. I didn't hear any pack related noise. I packed everything pretty tight, so...
Everything is well paded so very comfortable. I had ppl over at REI help me adjust it before the trip. This might explain why I didn't experience any shifting. IMHO, if you pack it right, tighten all the straps, and adjust it well, then you should have a great experience!
Got this backpack for cheap at REI garage sale , so can't complain about value :)

This thing gave me trouble from the start. It was unstable when heavier objects were lashed to it and rather uncomfortable on my back. I ripped open a scab on an exposed corner. It had plenty of space and was fairly light but i really didnt care for it to much. Go for lower alpine, much better.

I great pack. I brought it last year and found it to work wonderfully. I've used it on a couple of 20 milers and haven't found a single problem with it.
