I saw this unit for sale at Sam''s and had to do a double take at the price.(149.00 after mail in rebate) I am upset at my Etrex Vista because of it''s poor reception. This unit is not quite as fancy but beats the Vista hands down when you factor in the price. I get reception in my house..downstairs! My only complaint so far is that the detailed maps are not quite as accurate as Garmins Metroguides and it doesn''t have ROADLOCK to keep your cursor on the road your traveling. Maybe map accuracy will be better on future updates. I highly reccomend this unit, especially if you can get it for under $200.

I originally tried the Map 330 as a replacement for my older Garmin, it had lots of bells and whistles for the money. After two trips, however, I decided to return it and get another Garmin. The 330 is not waterproof and mine went south after a couple of rainy days. I had it in a side pack pouch but the moisture seeped through. I haven't had this problem with the newer Garmin units. The map feature is fun to play with on the highway but in the field uses batteries pretty quickly, even if you only use the GPS to intermittently verify your position.

I used this GPS for the Jeep for a year before trying it out backpacking. Compared to a friend's Garmin Summit it was obviously heavier and bulkier, and it is not as water resistant. It does work well at providing basic positional information, but the maps are useless for anyone doing any serious backpacking in wilderness terrain-they're geared to vehicle use. But, I don't think an eventual topo map option would help anyway since only a fool would venture into the backcountry without a backup paper map & compass.

Great unit !! I have used it for 3 months and have no complaints. It needs to be kept warm in the winter to see the screen well, but that is a flaw of the LED type screen, common on all units. I'd recommend the unit to all serious adventurers.

The Magellan Map 330 is the best deal out there for the money if you are looking in this price range. I liked the Magellan units and considered a 320, but really wanted a base map built in. I mainly need it for camping and backpacking trips, but it is nice to have a base map for a few more bucks. The pick up is good in heavy tree cover, and works fine inside, even on the 1st floor of my 2 story home. Data entry is easy, and there is a promotion offering their Mapsend Streets software and cable by mail. I received mine literally within 2 weeks of buying the product and sending in the card. My 2 complaints are this : the backtrack feature connects points where you turn the unit on and off. So if you turn it off in one place, then turn it on in another, there is a straight line to connect the points drawn on the map. This can be remedied bu just saving the backtrack as a route before turning it off. Also, Magellan does not offer topo base maps that are uploadable AT THIS TIME. I am told that they will do it soon. I hope so, as this would make navigating in mountainous territory much easier without having to use a paper map also. For $230 with a cable and software program, I could not find anything close for under $500. This is an incredibly capable unit for the money, even twice as much.

Customer Service

Knowledgable on the phone about features before the purchase.

Presently, the 330X package is a marvelous deal. It would be attractive @$299 because it includes the car bracket, combination data/12V cable and the Streets CD all in the box (only with the "X" bundle). To sweeten the deal, Magellan presently has a $30 rebate. It gets better! etronics sells the "X" for $249, the price most places have for the 330 alone. SAMS CLUB has it for another twenty dollars less. No Garmin is such a good value. The basic map in a 330 is more detailed than the basic map in Garmin memory. The accessories, such as the swivel mounting bracket I put on my motorcycle, are also more affordable than Garmin.

Customer Service

Very good conversational manual.

Does what it's claimed to do, give basic road map and coordinate info, I get about 8 hours per set of batteries, not too hot. Biggest problem is that none of these Magellans seem to be waterproof. Magellan says, 'weatherproof' whatever that means. Only Magellan of all the manufacturers doesn't explain how its receivers do under IPX waterproofing standards, which measure water resistance to streams of water (imitating hard rain or splashing forces), progressing to total immersion in 1 meter of water.

Customer Service

No reply to my e-mails asking specifics about their receivers.

This is a good GPS, my only complaints are that it's a little big for the job it does and it does like batteries. I'm only getting 9-10 hours per pair of AA batteries. I don't use the map feature for backpacking myself.

Nick, unless you found a time machine, it's obvious you haven't "used this GPS for the Jeep for a year" since Magellan released the 330 MAP less than 6 months ago (and a press release at that). I'd have to agree with the earlier reivewer this is a fantastic value, particularly when compared to the overpriced Garmin units. It's also lighter and more compact than Garmin's 12 series (a fairer comparison than the eTrex).
