I''m actually a runner. but i hike and camp all the time. the protrainer is my first HRM. i have been running for over 12 years and never gave HRMs a thought, untill recently. now i am already seeing improvements. This product is very easy to use. I''ve read in other reviews that the instructions are hard to understand. I don''t consider myself a supersmart person but the booklet was pretty easy to follow. using it properly may take assistance i.e. proper training usage.

I purchased the Protrainer XT (without the cycling attachment) to train for Cross-country and Track races. So far it has performed up to my expectations. I've worn it almost every single day when I run (even races) for almost a year. It has many options to facilitate interval and speed workouts, but also can be easily used to just keep a target heart rate range. The feature I like the best is the review of the last workout. Showing average and max heart rates, time spent below-in-above your target heart range. If your into running races with a heart monitor (I didn't find the chest strap to be bothersome), this can provide valuable feedback. By pressing the lap at every mile or 400m (or whatever), you can review what your average heart rate was for each section of the race (plus what it was when the lap button was pressed).
The polar coded transmition also came in handy when other members of my team wore HR monitors provided by the school. They were crossing signals with each other up, but I stayed safe and sound.
Like any other piece of electronics, it is a bit confusing to work at first. If you read the manual it's not that much of a problem.
