Best investment so far for my work at Delaware Drywallers. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of the opportunity to get the highest quality all-around boots.

They have a good Vibram sole also. And the only stitch on the whole boot is on the inside of the foot. This is done to eliminate heel cup warpage due to stitching, and also because that part of your boot is less likely to get hit by stuff on your hike. The kids and Peter Limmer and Sons really made the best boot ever. Our Remodeling Contractors bought this and they were satisfied also.

I am training for the 100 mile circumnavigation of Mont Blanc, and needed some new boots. I have a wide, large volume foot that is really a challenge to fit. I tried all the brands you are already familiar with and ended up with some off the shelf Limmer mid weights. I just wanted to make sure that there was a balanced review on this site.

They are nicely crafted, not glued together. I believe the original design goes back to 1918...about the era of Heidie's grandfather. The leather is generally twice the thickness of your typical REI fare...or about as stiff as plastic ski boots. If you don't have the time to break these in, then they are not a good choice. I cannot sugar coat the fact that it took me about 30 miles before they even started to flex.

If you have a wide foot, this seems to be the largest to box one can find before one considers custom boots. Of course, the Vibram sole is replaceable...unlike glued shoes, such as Asolo, etc

I will have 20-30 lbs of pack, over generally rocky terrain with occasional daily altitude changes of over 3000 meters.

I currently call these shoes the "iron maidens" but am quite hopeful...hopefully I can edit this review and offer an update.

I would honestly try to persuade anybody from buying a pair of Limmer Standards. They are German made on Limmer lasts and while I think the quality is there I didn't find the comfort to be even close to what one should expect. These long break in periods Limmer speaks of in my opinion is maybe due to the lasts or something as I see no reason for a boot that's so well constructed to be so uncomfortable. I ordered these boots after much research as the Vasque and Dolomite boots I'm use to have both turned into trash. I wanted something rugged and sturdy as I'm fairly hard on my boots. When I first opened the box I was VERY impressed however after putting them on I couldn't have walked to my mailbox in them. I've NEVER had this issue with any other foot product and my feet are fairly well built for out of the box boots and shoes. In any event, the right boot felt far worse and with my feet both measuring the same in the places these hurt I couldn't understand. I called them up and this is when I got concerned! The man I spoke with at Limmer (not Karl) actually told me it was the “boot that didn't hurt he was concerned about”. I felt like I was in a Steve Martin cruel shoes story line and at that point decided to return them. My feeling was that if it was the boot that felt comfortable causing trouble it wasn't an issue I wanted Limmer to fix for me. I have since switched to the Meindl Guffort and in my view this is a far superior boot. Out of the box they fit me like a glove. As a matter of fact I put them on, walked 10 feet to the car and drove to do a 1 mile hike without any discomfort!

Unbelievable boots. Got a pair of the lightweights, and they are unreal. Get a pair of these boots. All leather so they breath, they mold themselves to your foot, and they are waterproof. No gimmicky GoreTex, which wears out in about a year, and which is rendered useless anyway with a little time on the trail--those micro-pores that make it "waterproof and breathable" get clogged with dust and debris, and then you might as well just put your foot in a trashbag. If you keep your Limmers greased, they are as waterproof as it comes. Even more so since the whole upper boot is made from one piece of leather--there is only one small seam on the instep. No seams means no leaks. And no seam up the back of the boot means a more flexible heel pocket (easier on the ankles). The lightweights are pretty thick, so they are great for backpacking and day hikes alike. If you're going to be doing a lot of trail work, I would think about the Mid-weights or the standards. At $50-75 more than you were thinking of paying for you new boots, this is a bargain of a lifetime. Limmer will re-sole them for you (up to three times, realistically), and with good care they can last 10-20 years. Think of it as an investment. If you cant get up to their store in intervale, NH (near Conway), they can also send you a catalog that describes how to trace your own foot. Then you can call them and order the correct size. They'll describe in detail how to make sure they fit, and you can try as many pair as you like. As long as they're in perfect condition (wear them indoors), you can just send them back and keep the ones that fit. Limmer Boot Co. is run by a hardworking, outstanding group of people who are dedicated to their craft. Do yourself a favor--get a pair of their boots. You'll have happy feet and you'll be supporting a group of warm-hearted, dedicated craftsmen. People like this are getting harder and harder to find. And make sure if you are ever within an hour or two of intervale, NH, that you stop in their shop. The building is (this might be a little off) a couple hundred years old, they make their custom boots right there (4 year waiting period, as there are only two people that do it), they have all sorts of history scattered about the store and hanging from the walls (their original leather ski boot, the first patent for a leather ski boot filed in the US, and HUNDREDS of pictures of their boots all over the world, sent in by happy customers). If he is there, Peter Limmer himself will kindly show you around the shop, show you how and where the boots are made, and chat with you about boots for hours. Its an experience unto itself. These people are rediculously dedicated to what they do; they eat sleep and breath boot and have been perfecting their boots for almost a century. They are driven by your satisfaction in their product, not selling it. Its refreshing. You're not just buying a pair of boots, you're enriching your life. These boots are the best thing to happen to backpacking since the tent. They are put together artistically. I have hiked well over 500 miles on mine, and never had any problems. The only problem is I bent a lace hook, but nothing I couldn't fixed. These boots are heavy, but i choose to cut weight in other places, and let my feet cut around in true comfort. A few times I have choosen to not bring camp shoes because these boots are so plush. I can't say enough about these boots. They have a good Vibram sole also.
