Bibler Tents Megamid Tent Tents

Bibler Tents Megamid Tent Tents

DESCRIPTION

This three-person, extra-roomy tent has a feature that makes it well suited to climbers and skiers--it has no floor!. Without a floor, the Megamid weighs just 3-1/2 lbs. for 81 sq. ft.. Without a floor, the Megamid can be pitched over rocks which might make a perfect cooking platform inside. Without a floor, the Megamid can be dug into the snow on spring ski outings. Without a floor, you can spill the coffee, let the dog in and leave your boots on. Can be set up using your adjustable trekking poles or skis (not included). Not only will it keep the rain out, but it will stand up to insane weather conditions and can handle tons of wear and tear. Optional bathtub-style detachable floor (sold separately) keeps even more weather out, yet only adds 1 lb. 4 oz..

I'm into my third season with my Megamid tent. I have used it in the spring, summer, fall and this year on two winter camping trips. It does all that it promises and more. I understand there is a lightweight model on the market now, which if it is anything like the original should be a great product. If I wear out this one the lightweight model will probably be the next one in my inventory.

This is the first time I've written a review, but felt compelled to add this one to the Megamid. I purchased my first megamid thirteen years ago. I was always a tarp guy, never tented. When I could not find a suitable tarp I stumbled on to the Megamid. Look, buy this tent. I've used it on 12 mountain sheep hunts lasting up to 14 days at 4,800 - 5400', three mountaineering trips including Mt. Waddington, Baker and Matier. You can sleep two in it or more, but it's unbelievable with two. All gear is stowed in the tent. You don't get out of the sleeping bag to cook. If you use a pee-bottle you don't leave to go to the bathroom. I've weathered every weather condition including up to 1' of fresh snow, as much rain as you can get from BC and some incredible winds. The most risky spot was a high glacier camp where I endured extremely stong winds. I thought I was going to lose it, but I didn't. The problem was poor snow anchors. Having said that, Black Diamond should put a few guy attachments on each side slop. I should say nearly all my camping is in fall or above tree line. In buggy country the lack of a bug net could get to some folks. Oh, I also use a very light bivey sac made by North Face and always put down a 3/4 thermorest. Use you raingear and other shells under your feet. This is a go light proven approach. I'm on my second Megamid. I don't like the color, but the yellow one I just looked at looks very nice. I miss my old Chounard - he was the guy who made the first one. It was blue and white. Easy to see when struggling to get back to camp after dark. Good luck, buy it, you'll never regret it.

This is a great shelter. Once its seam sealed it will hold out the weather nicely. Wind stability was suprisingly good. I have SQUEZZED five people in. Not very good for very cold weather mainly because its single wall. Very fast pitch and have had no duribility problems. Stands up well in moderate snow. Great shelter. Fixable problem- because its not double wall and it comes not seam taped, you will get moderatly wet in heavy rain.

I agee with all the comments from the previous review (philk). This tent is very roomy for 2 adults and is a breeze to setup. It has great living space inside due to the 5+ft interior height. You can easily cook inside the tent, which we did one night due to mosquitoes. The tent is designed to be staked flushed to the ground or 9 inches above. You could fit 4 persons in the tent if staked off the ground, but would lose some of the weather proofing and would be cramped. The tent does accumulate condensation but not too bad. I used the tent in the Sierra Nevada's, which is fairly dry and any condensation dried quickly. Haven't had to use the tent in bad weather. This tent is suppose to be able to handle 4 seaons but I'm a little skeptical. I'm not sure if it could handle high winds very well.

Customer Service

Excellent, the tent came without pole and Bibler Fed Ex it immediately.

A friend and I purchased a blem Megamid last year to use on the AT, on nights when we could not stay at one of the shelters. On the positive side: 1. It is very lightweight, about 3.5# with pole and stakes. 2. It is very easy to pitch, with 8 stakes & a shock-corded pole. Average time is 2 minutes for one person. 3. It is roomy - 9' x 9' approx, although the last 1' in each direction is right on the tent wall. We have slept 4 in the Megamid during a light rain fairly comfortably, with the center pole in place. It would be even roomier if the tent is supported from overhead using the top loop and a rope, rather than the pole. 4. The tent appears to be well made with good stitching and strong seams and good attention to detail. 5. Bibler/Black Diamond customer service is very helpful. (see below) On the down side: We have found that the non-breathable fabric creates a lot of condensation on cool evenings (most of our backpacking is done in late winter and late fall). Perhaps we have not found the trick to venting properly, but there is a lot of moisture inside the tent even with 2 people. There is a vent at the peak, above the door and the door is large so perhaps we will find the proper venting technique one day. When we first got the tent in September, we set it up in the back yard and left it up for several days. Each morning the inside wall of the tent was damp (with no occupants overnight). We contacted Bibler Customer Service, E-mailed photos and discussed the problem. They were always helpful and courteous. Eventually they asked that the tent we sent to them for testing (at their expense). They pressure tested it and said it was ok and returned it overnight by FedEx. Very good service, the best I have run into in a long time. They even followed up with an E-mail after our first trip to see how the tent performed. In light rains it appears to be watertight; we have not tested it in a hard rain yet. Overall we are very happy with the tent and would recommend it to anyone, but keep in mind that theer is no floor and the inside walls will get damp during the night.
