I've used the Taj 3 many times as a leader for the volunteer group Inner City outings. This tent has always come through for me in rain, cold, and wind. You can fit two adults and a good amount of gear or 3 or 4 kids, who always have a ball. It's got a lot of mesh for warm night star viewing and a low slung fly for rainy nights. It also has a 53 inch peak so nobody feels claustophobic in this tent. Buy with confidence, use with pleasure!

Customer Service

You know it's good with REI as the maker.

I bought this to replace my old worn out car camping tent. It is a very roomy 2 man tent and a slightly tight 3 man tent. Lots of head room. It rained for 4 days on its first test and the rainfly did leak at the velcro tabs. Thanfully most of the water ran down the poles. I've seam sealed it but haven't had a chance to test it. It has stood up to 45MPH winds without incident. Ventilation is good with the rain fly open, but not great when the fly is completely closed. Overall, excellent solo car camping tent or roomy backpacking tent for 2.

Customer Service

REI has great CS, but this tent was bought as a resale item and does not come with any warrenty or CS. It was a risk, but also a steal at that price.

Got the tent and took it right away to Moab for a week-long test. Perfect size for my dog, me, and all the crap a girl needs when car camping. The vestibules were perfect for gear on one side and a shade-seeking dog on the other. I agree that 3 people is really pushing it for this tent but 2 people would definitely fit... along with a dog. (= As a modest person, I wasn't thrilled with the window on the rain fly because whether it's night or day, others can see right in. But I just bought a little hankerchief and pinned it to the loops near the window. Worked great!

Customer Service

Haven't needed them yet but am glad to see others have had such good experiences with them!

The taj 3 had heaps of room for 4 kids. The vestibules had room for all our gear. I took it to austrailia on a boyscout trip. We hiked 80k and camped for 5 nites. It rained like 4 inches on the third nite. By the way, we were on the southern coast. we were bone dry. It was a sight to be the only boys out of fifty to be dry! After that nighte, the taj 3 was my new favorite. i hope you will enjoy this awesome tent as much as we did!

This tent rocks! It''s perfect for two people and a dog or child. It''s a snap to put together and it has great finishes (an attic and other pouches for your stuff.) I love the head room. The way it was designed, you get great light coming through the fly. It''s a joy to be inside. This is my all-time favorite tent.

Three in this tent would be tight. Not that this was important, cause I baught it for one. My primary reasons for the purchase were...1) I love doing business with REI. 2) The ventalation of the tent was great. 3) I liked the design in general (I know, I'm shallow).

First night out with the tent it rained all night. Rained like a cow doing "you know what" on a flat rock. The next morning there were puddles under the tent..inside was bone dry. Needless to say, I was happy: and dry.

While definitely not a hardcore shelter like a MHW or SD, the Taj is very well suited for the car camping and shortie backpacking trips I (and most others) do. It's about as 3-person as any other tent with that (manufacturer) tag, but it's a killer 2-person structure.

Bad first: Tent floor is kind of thin, so you definitely need the footprint ($30) or a good plastic sheet or tarp (more like $7 at Home Depot) under. Poles look a little delicate, but they've held up so far. It's listed as a 3-man (at 51 sq ft, no way they'd say otherwise), but the floor layout makes 3 cozy (only way to lay is side-by-side, everybody strict north-south, unless two of you are less than, oh, 5ft tall). Setup is not as foolproof as this fool would like (the main poles intersect twice, making that first couple of clip-ons resemble a bad comedy sketch), but it's the diff between 5 minutes and 10 minutes, no biggie.

Now, good: If you use it as a 2-man, you will fall in love with this tent. Pole layout gives you nice taut walls with just enough inward lean to shear wind reasonably, but give great shoulder-level space. Lots of mesh all around, which means that I dig it in the summer and am waiting to see how things work out in November. Two doors mean nobody has to wake up with their tentmate on their shins during the midnight nature call. And, the doors are big enough that you don't have to crawl on entry/exit.

And: It shouldn't matter, but I dig the way the tent *looks*. Neat design. Finally, it's an REI, which means that if I have a problem with it, the problem *will* be resolved. Those guys understand customer satisfaction.

Overall, I'm glad I settled on this tent. Suits my medium-core needs very well, reasonably easy to set up, great space for two, incredible space to weight ratio, backed by REI.

(This tent may be hard to find this season in the stores, but I got mine off the Web site first try, no problem.)

Customer Service

REI. The airlines should take lessons from these people about cust svc.

I have been camping a few times with this tent and am very pleased with it. Extremely roomy for 2 people and their gear, easy to set up, and great overall design. I particularly enjoy leaving the fly off if possible, and enjoying the view of the night sky from inside the tent.

Other nice features are the great ventilation, and doors that are very easy to get through and stand in.

Customer Service

REI has the best customer service I know of. If you have a problem with a REI item for as long as you ownit, you take it back for a replacement or refund.

Awesome tent. This is the perfect tent for two big people. My brother and I (both 6'-3")used it for three weeks in Iceland through the heavy rains and strong winds and never had a problem. It's a very strong and roomy tent. The two doors are great so you don't climb over each other. There are three storage pouches and an attic loft (great for drying clothes and socks). With the ground sheet and everything including extra stakes, the tent weighed in right at 9 lbs., excellent for the floor space and sturdiness you get. The only problem we had was with a little condensation coming up through the floor during heavy rains, but we never got wet.
