I go this tent becase my old SD tent delaminated after 24 years because I laundered it - Don't do this. Sierra Designs sold me the tent for $100 because they don't cover delamination due to washing it in a machine, which was nice of them. I've used it once and it worked fine. It is roomy for two people and we stayed dry in the rain.The tent stands much better if it is streached out and staked down - not free standing. I was told by SD if you have the older model where the cross pole flips down they will repair or replace the tent because it is considered a design flaw. I'll stay with SD because they stand behind their products!

THE FIRST REAL BACK PACKING TENT I HAVE PURCHASED. THE 3 PERSON FOR 1 TO 2 CAMPERS WAS MY PLAN AND IT WORKS EXTREMELY GOOD FOR TWO AND GEAR COMFORTABLY. LIGHT, EASY TO SET UP ARE A COUPLE OF THE STRONGEST POINTS FOR THIS TENT. I CAMP WITH THE BOY SCOUTS A LOT IN OREGON. RAIN AND WET DO NOT BOTHER THE JUPITER CD BUT IT YOU WILL NEED MORE VENTILATION ON WARM STILL NIGHTS. WE HAVE CAMPED ALONG THE DESCHUTES RIVER AND EVEN IN THE OPEN WITH THE FLY OFF, THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR STEALS AND BREEZE THAT MAY TRY TO COOL YOU OFF. ON A SCALE OF 1 - 10 IT IS AN EASY 8.5 - 9.

THE NORTH FACE POLARIS

I've used this tent in the boundary waters for four straight summers as a guide. Also for several winters and numerous other backpacking trips. One morning I awoke to find a sandal in the vestibule completely floating in a puddle, the tent floor felt like a waterbed, but no leaks! Also great in the wind, easy to set up, and fairly light.
I have been annoyed on occasion by condensation dripping from the rainfly through the roof mesh. Also the door is hinged at the bottom, so you have to take care not to step on it, but it's not that big of a deal.
I use it mainly as a 2-person, with plenty of extra interior space. But I have used it as a three person, it was plenty cozy, but worth the tradeoff, as I rarely go with in a group of exactly three. Having the capability is nice.
Too bad it doesn't come with the snazzy two-color rainfly, though.

We used this tent for two seasons in Canada. Sets up quick and has a very small footprint that makes it easy to set up in thick woods with small openings. Walls are steep making sitting inside great. Profile allows for heavy rain sheading. This tent took some heavy pounding from high winds and driving rain without leaking or moving around. Vestibule is good.

The small pole over the door commonly flips down over the door, especially if the fly is on the tent.One needs to use nylon rope to connect from this pole to the main poles of the tent to prevent this. This is a major flaw. The tent is really designed for 2 people. I purchased this tent for bicycle touring and it seems adequate.

Jupiter is one of the lightest 3 person backpacking tent ever made. I love the easton pole which are light weight and strong. Its a really tight fit for 3 people but roomy for 2 person backpacking tent with some gear. The fly has clear section in front of the door..kinda like a window. The only bad thing is you have always stake the door part of the fly.

I purchased this tent while on a trip in the United States, I've used the tent here in the Philippines, Most people have no idea of what rain is until they have been rained on in a jungle with a three day non-stop down pour the tent was awsome I was nice and dry the whole time, Great tent I love it! also I'll be a father in a few month so I guess the tent doubles as a hotel

This is a well built, weatherproof tent for two. The three person rating is not realistic. Two adults and a small child is tight. Unlike the earlier reviews, I found the fly leakproof (as per recommendations I seam sealed the fly). I also have not had the problem with the brow pole over the door flipping down. I have been in this tent through a heavy thunderstorm-strong winds, heavy rains- and stayed safe and dry. It is fairly light for its size and seems roomy inside due to the near vertical walls. Ventilation is good if you pay attention to how you orient the tent into the wind, as well as how you guy out the fly, but the later(1998 and newer)models have a back window, which would be an improvement. Overall, a good tent for the money, especially if you shop around, because you can often find substantial discounts on SD tents. ( At $179, which I paid for mine, I think this tent is a steal.)

This tent is not a 3 man tent, well maybe for 3 little guys, but you can't get 3 6' tall teenagers in there. It is well made, and has a spacious interior for 2 people. The vestibule is on the small side, and the brow pole has a tendency to flip down, but that was fixed on the newer models. The weight is decent, and it packs down small. I have used one on a few occasions, and I like it. I like the Omega which is the Convertible version of the tent better. Overall this is a good tent for 3 season backpacking for 2 full grown guys.

Good:
I have not found a single leak in the tent. I am very happy with the manufactured seals, but I also added my own sealant to be sure. The tent is very light and the aluminum poles are very sturdy.
Bad:
The pole over the door tends to flip down if not properly secured. The 3 man rating is tight, but I am a large guy and two of my other friends slept in it with me without serious discomfort. The aluminum poles will freeze to your hands during the winter (Just wear gloves!)
Overall:
I like this tent for small excursions. We weathered a small blizzard in it and survived 60 mph gusts. Great for backpacking.
