I love my Walrus Tristar. I've used it for light overnight camping for over twenty years. I keep it in my trunk for unexpected camping opportunities! I recently lost the bag for the poles. Anyone know anyplace to get replacements?

What a solid tent! I just took my wife and 3 girls [ages 4,3 and 1] backpacking on a short trail for 2 nights. We were pelted with hail for over an hour -- TWICE! That doesn't include the on/off showers that came as well. We all fit in the tent [cozy, but fit]. The 2 doors and vestibules were wonderful. The tent kept us and our gear nice and dry. When you're out with your buddies and get wet, no biggie. When you're out with toddlers and get all wet in the Canadian Rockies, that can be a BIG DEAL. But the tent was a champ and let us sleep nicely. There was a bit of condensation on the inside of the bathtub floor [the bottom 4 inches of the wall is floor material to keep running water out]. And the underside of the fly was wet with condensation, but the only way to avoid that is to have a very breazy tent that carries all respiration related moisture away. I'd rather have a warm tent for my girls, since the mesh walls keep the condensation away from us. There was no dripping of the condensed water into the interior of the tent. If I was sure there'd be no rain I'd zip down the top of the door to allow venting, but that wasn't an option on this trip. We didn't experience much wind, but the 4 pole/4 season design would be very solid I'm sure. Even without guy-outs, but with them this would be a ROCK. So in my opinion this tent does ROCK. It kept us warm and dry in very nasty conditions, when it really mattered. Too bad MSR bought out walrus. I'm sure they'd still be pumping out awsome tents with super high quality like this one. Only drawback is 9 lbs. If I were to replace this tent I'd get a Sierra Designs Lightning XT 4. But that's almost $500!

Customer Service

never tried. MSR bought out walrus, so they'd be th ones to contact.

I bought this tent a few years ago. It is a simple lightweight tent for a good dollar value. I've used it alot and I have not had a single problem with it. It has been on my back during some hardcore falls and escaped without damage, the tent that is. I do not go out and camp out on exposed windy slopes during the extreme winter months, so it has been competent performer for my requirements.

A good tent. I've seen better and I've seen much worse. I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing it into extreme situations, but I Feel comfortable taking it into the wilderness for a few days.

We have been using this as a three-seasons high altitude back country ( Jasper National Park) tent. Great breezy sleep when the weather is stable and the fly can be removed. Sleeps 3 adults in comfort and we have used it for 4. It can be a bear to set up in a high wind because of the rather awkward pole bending routine but once it's up and properly anchored, it can withstand plenty of wind and rain. The fly would benefit froma few more grommets along the bottom edge to allow for additional tie downs, not so much for strenght but to tighten it to avoid...the dreaded fly flap. I wouldn't recommend it for severe winter use but we have used it on glaciers and in snowfalls without a problem. The quality of construction and materials is very high given the price. We bought it for $345CN four years ago.

I love this tent. I bought it about 5 years ago on sale at REI(can you believe it). For a multi-purpose camper like myself, I would say it is the best all-round tent. For long backpacking trips, I would say it is a little heavy, and bulky. But for a week it is just fine. It has a ton of room. It will sleep 2 people with incredible comfort. Dont know about 3 people, but Im sure it would be just fine. Lots of ventilation! Great tent!

I bought this tent when it first came out (over five years ago) and have used it in the muggy heat of Florida, high winds of Utah, wind and rain in Oregon, and the cold snow of Wisconsin and Colorado. The materials and workmanship are first rate and it can withstand a lot of wind when anchored properly. The vestibules are great for keeping gear dry, and the mesh panels make it a great tent in hot weather. There's tons of room for two-three people and gear and I've even used it with three people and two dogs in the rain in Wyoming with everyone and everything staying dry. The only drawback is it's setup time (a little time consuming with its five poles), but it can be done by one person (without a lot of wind). Overall, an excellent tent for 2-3 people in nearly any weather.

I've had this tent for several years, and I have no reason to complain about it. It's kept me dry in the rain, and warm in the winter. The weight is reasonable. It's got to be one of the better tents in a windstorm. It's holding up very well. The only caution I leave you is...don't go camping in the boondocks without remembering the tent poles!

I have owned this tent for 3 years and it has been a solid performer. It has great ventilation (lots of mesh, which also allows for great star gazing without the fly), 2 doors and 2 vestibules. It sleeps 3 adults or 4 children in comfort and I have used it in all 4 seasons without any problems. It does take some practice and patience to set up especially in bad weather. The quality of the materials and construction are first rate. The ridge pole (5th pole) creates a overhang for the front and back doors which allows for good air flow even during a mild rain or snow. When the weather is really bad I stake out the two vestibules which cover all the gear and keep the tent very livable and weatherproof. The white color of the main tent and fly create a bright and comfortable effect. This is a great family backpacking tent. I have no regrets about this purchase and would highly recommend it.

Customer Service

Prior to the purchase I spoke at great length with customer service and they were very patient and answered all my questions.
