I don't own any of these screws, but I have used them a few times. It seems everyone raves about how good thay are, but I'm not convinced. Sure, you can get them in really fast, but I think this is outweighed by a number of factors: 1. The handles are an absolute pain. They get tangled up with slings and other gear and make it hard to rack and unrack these screws. 2. The handles are so big you sometimes have to clear ice to allow you to actually turn them. 3. Price. If you're climbing ice that isn't very steep (up to Scottish II/III), then I don't see the need to bother with handles, or to pay for them. If you are climbing steeper stuff then you're much better off with the Black Diamond Express Screws-they're cheaper, neater, and as easy to place. Their handles fold away to nothing as well. These are good screws, and a joy to place, but I would never buy one. Similar Products Used: Black Diamond Express, Camp (their cheap screws are awful, but for $15 who cares?), etc. etc. |

The first rule of ice screws is to always purchase them with a handle to screw them into the ice. What else to look for in an ice screw: Ease of placement, speed of placement and how well they rack. I found the Grivel screws extremely easy to place. Two turns and they were started. Then comes the fast part. The speed in which you can screw even the 22cm model left me ready to climb more. Their placement is almost effortless. I have two complaints with these ice screws: Racking and price. The do not fit together well on a rack. These screws are a must for racking them on separate biners. A minor complaint but a noticeable one. Also these screws are the most expensive I have used. What is a good fast placement worth? I think $50 is acceptable. I summary give these screws an A+ for placement, an A- for racking, and a B for price. I highly suggest these screws Customer Service NA Similar Products Used: Black Diamond Express Ice Screw |
