Black Diamond Viper Android Leash Ice Tools

Black Diamond Viper Android Leash Ice Tools

DESCRIPTION

The Black Diamond Viper Android Leash is a progressive leash designed specifically for your Viper ice tools (BLD0281, BLD0282). Leashes might be a limiting factor in performance ice climbing. To appease the new school, Black Diamond designed the Viper Android, a comfortable, supportive, and easily detachable leash for Viper tools. This leash connects directly to your tool with a secure bolt & stud system and a quick release mechanism that sets your hands free in seconds flat. Tightly woven nylon webbing adds water resistance and durability. **ICE TOOL NOT INCLUDED.

I own a pair of the regular Android leashes, and since there is no listing for them, I thought it would help to put the review here. The Androids are good leashes overall. The best feature is the quick/easy/secure clip that connects the upper leash to the cuff you wear on your wrist. If you spend the time to make the length adjustments just right, this system is really fast. The clip will fall right between your thumb and forefinger when you're reconnecting to the tool. No fumbling! There are two problems that I've found with the Androids. First, if you're wearing big gloves (BD Guide, etc.) the cuffs require some struggling to get on and off (say you're sharing tools with someone else). Second, I don't find the cuffs very comfortable due to their lack of padding and the resulting pressure that is transmitted to your wrist from the thin strip of webbing on the bottom.

outstanding wrist leashes for the actual climbing part of ice climbing. They support your wrists very comfortably and let you swing your tools with confidence. I did have a couple of minor problems though. When I adjusted the length so that my hands were perfectly placed at the bottom of the Viper hand grip, the leash-length was just about too short for me to grip the tool by the top of the head (piolet style). Also, with the leash at this perfect adjustment-length for me, it's harder to clip back into the knob when you are done fiddling with gear and want to start climbing again. I can do it; and with pratice I'm getting better. However, if the system were tweaked just a bit (mount the attachment knob an inch higher on the Viper's shaft), it would result in a bit more slack, thereby making it easier to clip back in; and, use the tool in piolet mode. However, the idea is brilliant and it mostly works very well. You get great wrist support while ice climbing, and you can quickly and easily unclip to place/remove gear. You can also unclip and do some leashless moves for a spell if conditions call for it. The leashes are very well made. Aside from my minor gripes about length I am extremely happy with them.

Other leashes from BD, C-M, Trango. All good. These I think are probably the best though...
