These were my first pair of ice tools, and i still use them, five years later. They are a bit on the heavy side, but I feel that it gives petter purchase for the picks, so I don't mind. They give soild sticks and are stable and really sturdy, especially with the thicker alpine blade (not the traditional shape but "banana") Maybe it is because of my technique (or lack thereof) but if I place the axes really deep, the blades can be tougher to retrieve than some of the other models. Usually though, it is OK with a fairly shallow placement so it si really not a big issue.

I use BD's wrist loops with my Pulsar's but I have not ttried the newer modles from Charlet Moser.

The only drawback is that my knuckles always get a beating (particularly the little finger), and for pure waterfall climbing there are better tolls available. These are probably best for more versatile use. Also, the weight can probably be a problem for some climbers' style.

My favorite tools. In learning to Ice climb, I have tried numorous tools with the guides I have used over the years. When I finally decided to buy tools, I chose the Pulsar's because after everything I have used, I found them to be the best all around tool. for mixed, step alpine, etc. For heavy waterfall Ice climbing, I might suggest something else, if you have the money to expend on several sets of tools, but considering most of us don't....I would greatly suggest Pulsar's for anything vertical.

I've been using the pulsar for the last few years and feel they an excellent tool for steep waterfall ice and mix, I have also use them on some steeper alpine climb. They are field friendly if you need to change a pick on some climb, the picks are pretty bomb proof, I let some 250lbs guy use them and he tried planted the tools with full force on about 2inchs. of ice, the only damge was aslightly flat tip. The shaft (hand grip) would be suited for small to med hand size. As far as any thing I would change would be to maybe add alittle more weight to the top for a better swing. Agreat ice tool for the novice that will not grow out of!
