First and foremost, buy what fits - not what you read in magazines or reviews. That said, I do believe these are great boots. As a matter of fact, these are the third pair of Asolo boots I''''''''ve owned and I love them all. Durable for most trekking and hiking, the Ridges have a reasonable break in time. The leather does need to be cared for, and I''''''''ll admit I''''''''m not the most responsible about keeping them cleaned or Nikwaxed. Even still, I''''''''ve lived in this current pair for three summers, through moderate Cascade climbs and numerous North Idaho hiking trips. Hard to beat a Vibram sole, and the tongue doesn''''''''t shift around or move to one side after a few miles. I''''''''ve had the best results when I tie them tight at the start of the day, and then stop after few miles to shed a layer and retie them for the remainder of my trip.

i just bought these boots to use on my six week expedition through washignton, wyoming, and oregon. i broke them in on my trip to italy and although the killed my feet in the beging, once broken in they were great. they are good for mountaineering and i used them on Ranier already once. would be nice if were waterproof

I have the old style ridges- light brown suede(?) leather. They are a comfy, lightweight heavy duty hiking/light duty mountaineering boot. I just used them for a couple of months in Bolivia, for everything from on-trail hikes to moderate snow climbs. They are flexible enough and light enough to hike all day in. For snow climbs I find it necessary to put an insulated supergaiter on, otherwise the crampon straps will dig into your feet. Those new crampon bindings with a big plastic cuff may be ideal for this boot. They are too soft for frontpointing, the boot just bends.
