BEWARE FROSTBITE. LA SPORTIVA NEPAL EXTREME ! Despite the very misleading name these boots are not suitable for 'extreme' conditions in Nepal or indeed anywhere else. On a recent trip to Nepal at 5930 metres the only two people wearing these boots suffered frostbite requiring hospital treatment. I have contacted the manufacturers who claim they are not recommended over 4000 metres although I cannot find this information on their website. I was taken in by the name and descriptions of suitability for 'high altitude', ' mountain terrain and ice' etc but have suffered the consequences of frostbite. |

Well, after having regular Nepal's for six years (still great) I thought I would give the extreme's a shot for the extra warmth. Got a killer deal on a pair slightly used on Ebay, and well... they just rock. I can't believe someone would badmouth a boot line for a poor fit on thier foot. Bummer man, but get over it. These things climb, hike, run etc without a hitch. Bombproof boot for all your climbing needs!!! Customer Service amazing Similar Products Used: Sportiva K3's... Nepal tops... |

these boots have never fit right, I had them sized by a dealer in vancouver bc then bought them from, I think pyronese a web store in france. I've called the us customer service and they were very nice and sent me some tounge pads to help with the many blisters I get every time I wear them. dosen't help though- my only recoarse is to send them back to france- then if they don't fit any better I'm out the shipping money and still in the same situation. I climbed all the major volcanos in WA state with these boots and each time the boots reeked havoc on my trip. the blisters are so bad my feet are bleeding on summit day. At this point I have been using the boots for six monts and there getting no better. I've spent additional money on footbeds and special socks. So in closing I would not recomend anyone buy these boots. they are extreamely painful and if bought out of the us you have no way of fixing problems- Customer Service very friendly but not much help in my case Similar Products Used: koflouk |

I've used these boots for two ice climbing seasons and one mountaineering season. I have not found a downside to these boots. They are warm, comfortable, easy to hike in, climb in, etc. The tongue is adjustable and removable. Sometimes I take it out and wear my super thick synthetic socks. The toe section is very roomy and never makes my toes feel cramped or squashed. The lacing system is great with the locks located at mid-height. Freezing at night hasn't been a problem for me. I keep my boots between my sleeping bag and my neighbor's, put them under the foot of my bag or throw leftover handwarmer packets into them. Customer Service La Sportiva makes great stuff. Haven't had to use their customer service. Similar Products Used: Koflach (?). |

Simply put, these boots are sweet. I bought them to supplement a pair of plastic boots I own and I ended up selling the plastics because these boots do it all. They climb ice like a dream. No more sloppy heal slippage but still plenty of room for my toes to wiggle and stay warm (I have medium to wide feet). They are very stiff in the sole, allowing for precise climbing on rock and ice (they edge great but smearing is another story). They were comfortable right out of the box...no blisters. They hike infinitely better than most ountaineering boots. They're also pretty warm...which I attribute to proper sizing more than the insulation. If your toes don't have enough room they will always get cold. When it gets real cold (-25 degrees in the Daks) I wear a VBL, which has always kept my feet toasty warm. The only downside is shared by all leather boots...on multi-day cold weather mountaineering trips they tend to freeze overnight regardless of how wet they are (I pair em with supergaiters and VBLs on long trips to keep the boots dry from the outside and inside). This makes for an uncomfortable start to the day. Plastics rule in this regard because you can sleep with the liners in your bag and they come out toasty warm day in and day out. They are rather expensive. Fortunately I got them 20% off. Nevertheless, they're built for the long haul and I swear they were worth every damn penny because my feet are warm and comfortable now...not to mention I think they improved my ice climbing a bit (no more heel slippage and warm feet equals better performance on steep ice). These boots rock! Customer Service No experience with Sportiva customer service. Similar Products Used: Koflach, Scarpa |

I'd tried a friends pair of these and was amazed by their comfort. When it came time to purchase a pair of mountaineering boots I made sure I tried others first, but after trying various Asolo's, Koflach's and Scarpa's, the Nepal Extremes were the most comfortable. They're not an ultra wide or ultra narrow fit, and my narrow heel floats a little in the back. I treated them with snowseal to preserve the leather and enjoyed dry and warm feet recently while mountaineering in New Zealand. They can front point, hike in, hike out, scarmble, climb basic rock and trek on the glacier with total comfort. Actually, I had cold feet once, when at an icy belay stance with spindrift filling in the steps I kicked. I also attribute this to poor circulation caused by squeezing into tight bike shoes for too long. If you're after a mountaineering boot with less bulk than a plastic boot, but with decent warmth, try the La Sportiva Nepal Extremes. I bought these boots purely for Dog Sledding!! I needed something that would keep my feet warm & dry, after standing in around 12 inches of snow. Plastic boots were just not practical, as it would make standing on sled runners pretty difficult. Sorrels are terrible, as the sole is not rigid enough to stop the sled runners putting pressure on the soles of my feet. I thought, that these boots would take a lot of breaking in, but to my amazement, they are perfect straight out of the box. I even use these boots as my day to day boots during the winter because they are so comfortable. Even bought a pair for my wife!! Two pairs for $450 including shipping from France, or about the price of one pair from USA!! Do yourself a big favour & buy these boots!!! Customer Service Never had to use them, probably never will, these boots are bombproof. Similar Products Used: Asolo MTF700, Koflasch, Alpina, Lowe |

Strength:

Weakness:
None This is my first mountain boot, I took them on Mt Rainier in Oct. with 3-4ft of snow and ice. Great boot to wear right out of the box. The leather is very flexable around the shin area where you want it to be to avoid "shin bang". My first 3 toes on my right foot stayed frozen when out for extended periods, but thats partly due to me and the extremely cold weather we had. My overall foot stayed completly warm and DRY. These may be leather but believe me these babies are waterproof. On the downclimb there was probably 4-5 inches of water standing and not a drop got in. Good boot but I would definately not pay $425 for them. I was lucky and found them online for $315, for that price thats a sure buy. I give it 4 stars only because of the full retail price. these are great boots...I have only used them twice this year but I still know they are great. I used them on Mt Adams and Mt rainier. they are not as warm as plastics but you can move faster and stay warmer that way(I carry down booties for bivies.) or you can use toe warmers... I got no blisters and they broke in almost instantly...so comfortable...no more Koflach shin bang. a great boot... Customer Service customer service at la sportiva is great I asked them questions and they were quick to respond...I even got stickers Similar Products Used: koflach para double boots |
