They break in easily & are a joy to walk in. The sole & rubber sides have very, very good grip on rock, vertical or other. Two disadvantages: they get wet in & out after more than say 4 hours walking in the snow (as opposed to plastics). Also mine had two of the lace clips come off. It was repaired for free. About the fit: I liked them because they had a smaller heel than La Sportiva Nepal Top. They are very good looking boots as well, not something to take for granted (look around)! Customer Service Well, very good. Free repair (although I''d have been very disappointed otherwise) |

i own the snow and ice, and am rather pleased with them, so i decided to get these as well. for the price, you really can't go wrong. the snow and ice fit me rather well, but with these, i've had some soreness at the ankles. i guess it doesn't have the thicker inner lining as the snow and ice, but after one day trip, they feel rather fine. i wore these on a trip to Mt. Washington, not too long ago (mid May) and i had no problems kicking steps into the packed snow of Tuckerman ravine. also, the stiff soles made travelling on rocks a lot easier than something softer (especially on the decent). i don't think it was that cold, even with the wind, so i can't exactly say if these boots kept my feet warm, but i'm sure that are pretty warm for boots without insulation. although i have to say, i'd like something with a little more room at the toe. the top of the boot, right on top of my toes are touching my toes (does that sound confusing?) and i think in the winter, my toes may get a bit chilly, especially if i spend extended amounts of time out. Solid boots that fit my wide foot well (11.5). Nice and warm even in snow. Decent as an approach boot after they are broken in, though the solid shank sucks on really steep approaches. For moderate to flat approaches they are great. Also very good at climbing on rock due to the solid shank and toe design. If you're looking for a boot that does the approach, glacier travel and rock climbing, this is top notch. Similar Products Used: Koflach Degre, Raichle |

I love these boots. I have narrow feet and for whatever reason, they fit me really well. (I don't know how the person with wide feet found them to fit so well.) The boots are very stiff and are great for kicking those steps into the snow. A bit heavy, but very sturdy and warm and dry. Similar Products Used: None |

Great boots the relitivly short break-in period and the fit are just great. I have a 9 1/2 very wide foot and the boots fit like a glove. I knew the first time that I put them on that they were much better that the Makalu's I had just given away to a friend because I couldn't get them to fit or break in. The Salmon SM9 Snow & Rock is an excellent combination of a full on plastic mountaineering boot with a hard core leather boot. Overall, this combination was very well done, and these boots give you the best of both worlds; sufficient stiffness and support for high mountain travel, while being WAY more comfortable to walk in on bare ground than plastics. I find the support and stiffness is perfect for mixed climbs, where plastic boots are sometimes a pain. The plastic lowers make crampon attachment very secure, due to the pronounced welts, much more so than many "crampon compatible" leather boots. I've done some vertical ice climbing in them, and found them adequate, but I would strongly recommend the Snow & Ice model if you are seriously in to ice climbing. They're not insulated, so extreem conditions or multi day trips aren't their strong points, but I haven't had any problems other than cold feet for the first 15 minutes in the morning. However, if you are looking for a great hybrid boot capable of taking you on almost any terrain, this is one stompin' boot. |

These boots are a hybrid between conventional leather and plastic, and seek to provide the advantages of each. I.e. the stiffness and support of plastic with the comfort of leather. They are sturdy enough for glacier, alpine ice and rock, yet comfortable enough for the long approach. I like the stiffness of the plastic rand, though I wish it was a little "stickier" especially on the toe. I think traction was sacrificed here for durability. I don't like the way the heel rand bulges out over the foot print of the boot. The inner neoprene boot and lacing system are excellent. I modified my boots by replacing the factory insole with super feet and added a leather pad to tighten up the fit of the heel. If you need a general mountaineering boot and Salomon makes their boots with your feet in mind, overall it is an excellent choice. Similar Products Used: Asolo, Raichle, Vasque |
