Feathered Friends Helios Jacket Down Insulation

Feathered Friends Helios Jacket Down Insulation

DESCRIPTION

Our lightest down jacket. The cut is close, yet still allows a full range of arm movement. The 1.6oz nylon taffeta shell is sewn through and filled with 700+ goose down. It can shrink to the size of a softball when packed in its stuff sack, yet when you pull it out, no pile jacket will come close to being as warm.

I agree with the other 2 except a few feathers have leaked. I wear it daily in 10-40 F and am amazed at its lightness still.

Absolutely great minimalist jacket. Very good design of the handwarmer pockets. The elastic allows the opening of the pocket to pretty much seal closed around the wrist so you don't get a cold draft in the pocket. Doesn't have a hood if that's important to you. The light weight nylon hasn't let any of the down out yet and have yet to find a feather quill poking out.

I really like this jacket, and use it a lot. When I'm not wearing it, it's in my pack, ready to put on if weather gets cold. It actually weighed on my scales what the manufacturer said it did - 15 1/2 oz compared to 15 oz specified by manufacturer. My object was to get as much warmth for the weight as possible in a garment I could use in average winter conditions, and be light enough to carry for emergencies. The jackect has fulfilled these expectations. (If jacket were a bit longer, i.e. giving better butt coverage, it would be nice. Also it is not baffled. However, I believe this is the tradeoff one has to accept in a minimalist design. Feathered Friends does sell "beefier" designs, but they would generally be too warm and too heavy for the intended purpose.) I haven't personally worn other down jackets, but I have checked the warmth rating for the weight on similar garments from other manufacturers - like North Face, Marmot, Mountain Hardwear - I have yet to see a down jacket that comes close to the FF specs in warmth vs. weight.

Who should buy the jacket? People wanting light-weight winter and emergency gear, who don't mind paying a little extra for quality.

Who should not buy the jacket? People on tight budgets, or people wanting a down jackt for extreme cold conditions.
