I took this jacket with me on a research trip in Madagascar. This jacket was hardly breathable. By the time I reached the top of the mountain everyday, I was so drenched in my own sweat that I may as well have been wearing no rain gear at all. This jacket is great if you''re standing in one place and not exerting little to no effort. If you''re gonna buy this jacket, try not to sweat!

Customer Service

Horrible. I''m on eternal hold with them as we speak.

This jacket is awesome. I bought the Pre-Cip after reading Outside Magazine''s Gear Guide 2001. I do alot of day hikes, and I needed something light, easy to stow, water proof and breathable. The PreCip flips the bill. Several time this summer and fall, I was caught in the rain. Pulled out the Precip, opened the pit-zips and I was rollin. No Sweat....literally. As for durability, haven''t had it londg enough. But, will 15 pound day pack and going thru heavy brush at time, have not had any problems. I will carry this jacket instead of my Lowe Alpine Flash while snoeshoeing this winter.

This jacket has lived up to my expectations. It has kept , me dry in all conditions and all seasons. It is well designed with superlative venting and good hood/head coverage. The weight of ther jacket makes it ideal for ultra-lite trips. The only drawback with this jacket is a durability issue.

This jacket has done everything it is claimed to do, just remember to keep one thing in mind, it is meant as a lightweight weather jacket. The fabric tends to saturate a bit, but dries amazingly fast. The durability of the jacket is a bit questionable, which is why I say remember what it is meant to be. The fabric tears fairly easy, but is a cinch to repair with nylon field tape. Consider this coat if lightweight is your thing, it makes a great light parka, does great in the Washington rain. It's not the coat you're looking for if you want years and years from a jacket.

I've had the PreCip since Christmas '00. It's a superb rain and wind jacket. It packs down small and weighs next to nothing. I was pleased enough with the jacket to purchase the matching pants (on sale at REI-Outlet). Don't think I'll ever bother with Gortex in warm weather again. The Precip does a very good job and weights much less and takes up much less pack space than Gortex. This will be my first coice for cross-country skiing. It will also get a trial run on a few ice climbs. But for serious back-country mountaineering I'll leave the Precip at home ant take my 3-ply reinforced Gortex; it's much more durable.

On the minus side... the jacket does get; I normally flip the jacket inside out for a few minutes after completing a high-exertion hike to allow the inside to dry out The fabric, while strong, isn't as "robust" as 3-ply Gortex (the trade off for making it lightweight). The hood doesn't completely cover a climbing helmet.

I have no experience with competing products, but on the whole I'd say the PreCip is a first rate product. I'd buy it again without question and, as noted above, was sufficiently pleased with the jacket to pick up a pair of PreCip pants. Together the two pieces take up VERY little room in a pack and are SOOOOO light. I put mine in a fanny sack and barely know I'm carrying full storm gear.

I have had the jacket for about a year plus. Very light and the pit zips are a plus. seam tape came off in one place; wetted out in the sleaves after about 4 months (only real bummer); condensation really builds ups, it only breaths about half as well as gore tex, can get clammy. It does have great mobility, I wear it snowshowing when I need to scamble when it gets below 10, but need to open zips and pockets to pump out the perspiration. like wearing a bread bag under a pack in the summer, but for the price, and with pit zips. It does keep the rain out.

In my opinion, the best LIGHTWEIGHT jacket out there for the $$$.

Folds up to practically nothing and so light! Easily fits into my detachable pack lid along with my stove, meal, waterbottle and hat when dayhiking from base camp.

Great 3 season shell as long as your not bushwacking. Bought mine with extra room to fit over my fleece in early spring/late fall. Been caught in heavy rain once so far with no leaks; pit zips work easily for me and I have stayed cool on humid days. Not worn with a backpack yet however. Hood does its job and doesn't block my peripheral vision when cinched down.

Would have paid full price without hesitating. Marmot makes quality stuff, I have their new arroyo bag and love that too.

I've used my Precip jacket hiking and climbing. Very light weight and compact. The hood fits well over my climbing helmet and the chest pockets are large enough to comfortably hold insulated gloves and Nalgene bottles.

My only complaint is with the pit zips. The zipper pulls are so small that you can't find them or use them with gloves or mittens. I've attached cords to them to alleviate this problem, however.

So far it has worn well, but I haven't put too many trips on it yet so I am not completely sure about the durability.
