I got mine at REI/Outlet for about $200, and it was one of the best decisions I made all year. The only flaw is that my version does not have a fleece liner at the chin (I think the newer ones do). Other than that, it is a great piece of gear.

Another great purchase!!! Get your hands on this jacket if you can. Very light and stuffable. Has a roomy cut for layering. Full pit zips. Lots of pockets...the works. No wonder Backpacker loves it so much. Got mine at REI.com for a steal.

Great parka!

This is actually a review of the Ladies Momentum Expedition parka (I am submitting on behalf of my girlfriend.

We went car camping in Sonoma this weekend and the parka excelled. The people in the next site had begun to build an ark it was raining so hard!

It has everything you could want - lightweight, 100% water proof, all the technical features (including huge pit zips, double flapped zipper with gutter, radio pocket)

With the great deals on Moonstone out there, you really should take a look at this jacket.

Moonstones colors are a bit weird. We got "Blood", which is a cherry red color.

Have had this "Parka" for about 3 months now.
What struck me first is how short it was - I would call it more of a Jacket than a parka.
Materials and construction seemed pretty good.
There were some loose threads, but all seams were sound.
Did not like the way the hood snaps inside the back of the jacket- a bit hard to get to in the event of a downpour. Haven't tried this jacket with a packload yet but wonder how that snap and hood would work and feel.
The velcro patches are a bit small - you have to hunt a bit to get them to engage - especially the pit zip area. The powermesh inside pocket is adequate for gloves and energy bar but not much else. Could be a bit bigger- wouldn't hurt to have another inside pocket on the other side- why don't more manufacturers do this? Do any?
Jacket is quite light and fits quite well.
Could use some reinforcement in the wrist areas- high abrasion area that most manufacturers ignore.
Pitzips are HUGE - I wonder how well they would work in a downpour with movement. (it has been a bit dry here lately).

Have a Momentum tech Expedition Parka and a Momentum Ascent Parka with a Sauvage Parka on the way. Will post reviews of those as soon as possible.
Have had a MontBell Parka for quite some time.
Much lighter than the Moonstone Tech.
Hood construction, engineering of the MontBell is second to none- so far.

I bought my wife the Moonstone momentum expedition parka form REI/Outlet.com for 1/3 it's original price. Overall this is a great jacket. Extremely wind and water resistant yet it breaths well. Only complaint is the velcro on the wrists sometimes catches on the velcro on the main opening. This, I feel, is a design error on the part of Moonstone. They could have put the velcro on the other way around (hook side exposed vs loop side exposed) on either the wrist or zipper opening. Other than this I feel this is a bombproof jacket that should last her for years.

I actually have the Moonstone momentum expedition parka, picked it up at REI-Outlet.com for a song !!! So far I love this jacket, it has all the tech features of any other brand and has one (waterproof zippers) that I've not seen on another brand. The fit is excellent, looks great, light weight, lot's of pockets. What more could you want? I have a couple of Moonstone products, the cirrus jacket and vest and overall am very impressed with the brand. I also own TNF, and ACG shell's etc... I consider the Moonstone products to be atleast as good as these, if not better.

This really a very nice and well put together parka. The only problem I have with it is I wish it was just a couple of inches longer in length. But that is just personal preferance, it has plenty of coverage to hip area. It has a good athletic cut to allow for freedom of movement. And the hood is one of best I've used. So often with most companies hoods you wind up staring at the inside of the hood when try turning your head. Not with the Moonstone hood. Overall contruction is very good and durability gets high marks. The weight of my size medium 23.7 oz. Not the advertised 21oz.

I've owned this jacket since late summer '99 (when REI sold it at an incredible discount) and have yet to get wet, every seam is taped. It's lightweight & packs down to almost nothing, while being bombproof in every way. Every feature is 100% function: pit zips, rollaway hood (with visor), & one handed adjustments on everything.

The only thing I've noticed about the jacket, is one day I was wearing it while working under UV lights and it showed the stitching on the sleeves (the thread glowed while the rest of the fabric didn't.) The threads were revealed on some seams, and not at all on others. I wouldn't say that it is poor construction at all, it was just something I noticed.

I ordered the Moonstone Womens Momentum Tech Parka for my wife and all I can say is, Outstanding quality! It's made of light weight 3 layer Gore-Tex. I didn't find one thread hanging off this parka. All seams fully taped including where the logo is embroidered. Velcro closure points are a bit small but they are well thought out for the pit zips as you have an extra velcro anchor point so it doesn't get attached to the opposite side and close off the opening. Moonstone seems to have considered womens hips when they designed this parka as it's made a bit wider at the bottom. It is cut a bit shorter though so that is one thing to consider. If you can find it for around $250.00 I would say it's a bargain.
