I purchased similar one way back in 1998? It is very strong. I mean it. I wear this jacket 100% of time during winter and during snowboarding. This is very warm jacket compared to the light ones. Durability is incredible. I still wear this and I dont know when to replace this jacket. Maybe in next 5 years? Anyway, still it is 100% water proof but I have to apply water repellent every year or so which happens to ALL jackets. Go to REI and buy one of those water repellent that put into the washing machine and you are done. I dont know about newer ones but I think this jacket is better build than the newer ones in terms of durability. By the way be very carefull buying at EBAY or unknow online stores. They tend to sell FAKE north face jackets. Probably they will look same but you will see if you go into the rainy days. You will get soaked. I wear this almost all season except summer?

That guy from Alabama (Adog) a few reviews down--do all folks from Alabama talk like that? Gawd! I hope not. Must be some punk kid with too much time on his hands.

This jacket isn't too bad but is very heavy. I've go the mtn light also and I wear that more. This jacket is for really cold weather.

It has TNF snaggy zippers and has a few cold spots on the chest. After about 9 years I still use it, but only when it is really quite cold. It is the kind of thing you need for ice climbing cause it is really tough and seems to be waterproof.

I've got the green one (just like the picture) and haven't had a bit of trouble.

Also the snow skirt can't be used with anything zipped into the liner and the elastics on the cuffs that hold zipped in coats broke within a week.

I'd waited for years to save up to buy this jacket while in High School. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best piece of clothing I've owned, ever. I know North Face is considered overpriced, but my jacket, circa '93 is still serving as my only piece of technical outerwear for skiing, hiking, and day-in day-out wear. I don't own any other jackets. I run rather on the warm side, so i've never used a 'real' liner, just a longsleeve shirt or turtleneck, and the jacket's been warm enough for me. You might want to re-apply a waterproofer, like any jacket, it wears off. Mine has stood up to trees, rocks, brushes and scrapes with no damage and minimal wear. I can't recommend it enough. Of course, the legnth is a trade off, your legs will get run-off, but you have more freedom of movement, and access to pant pockets should you need it. Also, the jackets pockets are huge, and plentiful, an option i couldn't live without. I hope I never have to get another jacket, but it bums me out that they redesigned it, oh well.

Customer Service

Very helpful, not as good as say, LL Bean, but not bad.

This jacket has been with me through the Rockies, The Grand Canyon, the Artic Circle and on Hokkaido (Northernmost Japanese island off the coast of Siberia.) The jacket has a great number of features which is why I bought it but what irritates me the most is that the jacket has never felt "comfortable." It pulls at some places and bunches up at others all the while feeling too heavy and cumbersome at times with minimal coverage at the waist/pocket level. If I had to do it all over again, I would have done better to have a lighter weight jacket with a little more length. The 3 ply fabric is just too much. While backpacking and on long strenuous hikes where comfort is of utmost importance, the 3 ply fabric felt too cumbersome/heavy and clammy at times. Perhaps a 2 and 3 ply combo would have been a better choice.
What peeved me the most about my TNF Mountain Jacket was how quickly the sun took its toll on the fabric's original purple color (fading.) I didn't notice this until I looked at the fabric between my shoulder blades which is shielded from the sun by the hood and noticed how much fading had occurred due to the sun. Altough I do admit I spend a great deal of time in the sun, I didn't expect the color to start fading after only 1 season of use.

I would highly suggest shelling out the extra $$$ and have yourself a look at Mountain Hardware and especially Marmot if you are considering a world class shell. They have better cuts on the shell AND LININGS of their jackets along with better overall quality.

I purchased this exact jacket in green 1993 and I am still wearing it. I primarily use it for skiing and I have had nothing but positive experiences with it. I am a generally cold person so on a cold day being 10-20 all I do is put a vest under it and a long underwear top and I'm fine. I highly recommend this jacket for your all around skiing, hiking(bad weather but not constant rain), chilling out on the beach on a windy cold day.

Heavy, but durable. Good for resort skiing in trees. No rips or tears after skiing through sharp branches etc. Some of the pockets are unnecessary and just seem to add weight. Hood works well. Shorter cut is nice when using a harness, although I'd recommend wearing a bib so snow doesn't get between pants and jacket. Snow skirt works well.

I purchased a Mountain Jacket in 1994 and am still wearing it. I may look like I just jumped on the band wagon but hell, I paid out of the nose for it back then. I still love it! I wear it for climbing, skiing and backpacking and keeps me dry and warm. It has plenty of room for a fleece underneath as well. Great Jacket! Looks like the price has gone down on them so I would totally recommend it.

I think this jacket is great, along with the genesis polartec 200 fleece that goes along with it. I have this jacket for a while now and it's still going strong, It'll be a while before I'll get a new jacket, and when I do it's going to be a TNF one for sure!!!

I've had this jacket for five years and it has kept me dry skiing, hiking, and winter camping in very very wet cascade snow, not to mention rain. Wearing a backpack with 60 lbs of gear over this jacket has never been a problem for me. The under-arm vents are nice and the front pockets are big enough to fit your hands and other stuff, even when you're wearing really thick padded gloves. The hood can be easilly adjusted with gloves on. You could get a cheaper gore tex jacket though.
