Great jacket for the price, but a full retail there are details that would have to be addressed to get full $ value. The ease of threading the main zipper while wearing alpine weight gloves, the cheesey fleece zipper flap at the chin, and the worthless powder skirt are my complaints. Otherwise I would be caught dead without this jacket(or maybe I would be dead without this jacket?). Lots of miles and vertical skiied in this jacket and still no problems, all-in-all very recommended at a discounted price.

Customer Service

None, speaks volumes about the quality of the product.

Just got one of the new GoreTex XCR jackets, and I goota say that the quality is great on this jacket. TNF seems to come out with improvements almost every season. An earlier post said that the velcro scratched their neck. Well, with this jacket TNF put a softer velcro patch along with a host of other improvements. So far I've only had a chance to wear this jacket in the mountains of Colorado. With a good base layer and a fleece, I was never cold, nor did I overheat. Plus, this jacket proved to be very durable.

The $245 price listed on this site seems to be on the low side. Because TNF switched over to XCR GoreTex, you can get one of the older jackets on clearace for that price. The newer jackets all cost much higher. I actually bought an older version of this jacket for about $200. When I sent it in to TNF service department to get a different color, they sent me the new version of the jacket.

Customer Service

Excellent service. Quick turnaround and upgraded my jacket for free!

Things I like:

-Completely water-tight during hard rain with 30 mph wind gusts with no "muggy feeling" iside the jacket.

-Hood and hood adjustmenst work really well and are easy to use, even with ski gloves on.

-"Core vents" do their job well.

-A plethora of pockets to store gear

-Works exactly like a good Gore-Tex shell should

Things I don't like:

-Retail price of $410 (find it some where on sale)

I am now glad that I bought an "older" model TNF Mountain Guide! I bought the 98 model, which has pit-zips instead of the "Core Vents". I have noticed that the core vents on popular brands of shells tend to leak when they are open in the rain, so instead of pouting that I didn't get the newest shell, I am quite happy. Because of the Shweet price I got, everything about it is very nice, and it has been below zero here in MN for a week. With my Denali fleece zipped in I am impervious to any kind of weather, except the extreme wind-chill factors we see here. On those days I normally lock myself in my house and terrorize the cats. One "bad" thing about the jacket: The Velcro tab on the inside of the neck drives me NUTS when the hood is up! (Now that I have brought that to light it might drive YOU nuts, too!) Keep in mind that this jacket is much better with a fleece liner. It gives it much more versitality. Just find a single friend who lives in his parents' basement to buy you one for Xmas.

I've had my mountain guide for 2 years, and I love it! It's lightweight, and flexible unlike many which are really stiff. The gore-tex works like a charm, and you can find some killer deals.

I've seen them for as low as 150... but i'd say 200-250 is a good deal. It's a sweet deal for gore-tex. I've tried others that claim they're waterproof and it never is. Fork out the extra 50 bucks or so for the real stuff.
