Marmot DriClime Windshirt First Layer Tops

DESCRIPTION

Forgetting this piece is kind of like forgetting sunscreen as you head out for some nude sunbathing in Antarctica. You will be very sorry. Marmot's signature piece. Any activity, any layer. Shelled DriClime slides easily against your outer shell for great freedom of movement.

This is probably the best layering piece I have. I've begun to bring it instead of a long underwear top. Great in the winter for high activity (snowshoe/xcski) when the shell is too warm. Perfect for early starts on cool mornings. And great for any time the wind blows but a shell is overkill. As a under layer I'd say it is warmer than mid-weight polypro but a bit cooler than expedition weight. It definatly gets stuffed in my pack almost every time.

I have tried a lot of layers, and this one takes the cake. I wore it this season on Denali, first as a jacket, then as an insulating layer higher on the mountain. The full zip lets you vent, and it is incredibly warm for the weight. Unless it is raining, I would wear this over gore-tex anytime. If you don't have one, you should.

Patagonia makes a similar product called the Puffball jacket, but I think the Marmot is more versatile due to lighter weight and full zip

This garment covers more ground than it should... Although heavier, more technical shells inspire greater confidence when planning an outing, I've logged more time in the past three years wearing the Dryclime Windshirt than any other piece of outerwear. Going light is a reality and the Windshirt reigns supreme. if its cold enough that I know I'm not going to get rained on or face a true Winter storm,I take it over my Gore-Tex shell most of the time. For colder conditions where I'll be aerobically active (backcountry skiing, skinning and peak bagging), I've worn it over Dryclime base layers with a heavy fleece vest (Marmot "Poacher Pile") over it and been able to be comfortable all day at high elevations (in Winter) where Gore-Tex jackets are always too hot while your climbing...Enough said.
If these situations sound familiar, you should own one. A five star product and not all that expensive!
