The North Face Mens Nuptse Jacket Down Insulation

DESCRIPTION

700+ fill power down with a down proof shell (fabric for down clothing needs to be a specific density to prevent down filling from slipping out) keeps you seriously warm. This is a perfect piece on its own or as a mid-layer under a weatherproof shell. Compare at $190.

The Nuptse has served me well for several years. It is very light and compressible yet still quite warm. My girlfriend always tries to pawn her Marmot down sweater off on me, because it's not as warm as my Nuptse.
Two criticisms. First, the outer fabric is far from downproof. It constantly sheds tufts of all sizes. The lining is fine, though. Second, the pocket/stuff-sack needs to be a little larger. It's very difficult to get the entire jacket into it, and I worry that I'll tear the fabric of the pocket each time I do it. (Usually, I just use a separate stuff-sack.)

The great thing about this sweater is that it is both lighter and warmer than fleece. It's perfect for general use. I wear it motorcycling, camping, belaying, and just hanging around town. It's good down to about 30 degrees with a t-shirt underneath, and down to 0 degrees with a thermal. I love the high collar. It leaks a little down, and the pocket zippers always catch, but at the sale price (less than $100-) is a great buy. Not a real "technical" jacket, but a perfect all around warm sweater. I wear mine all winter long.

This jacket is warm and versitle. Down should not be worn in the rain so make sure you have a good shell. Thhis jacket is warm enough for most condtions. If you want one step higher i reccomend the mmarmot parbat (dryloft)

I paid $78 for this jacket and have been pleased with it ever since. It is warm (not for anything too serious, but for most winter conditions) and it's packable, which I really like. It also lofts quickly, so after it turns from pillow back into a jacket in the morning, it will warm you up nice and quick. My only real gripe is with its basically useless hood. A zip-off insulated hood would be much better, but would probably up the price considerably. Still, a very nice piece of clothing. Typical TNF quality.

I'm not really a day hiker, just a college student from the midwest. This jacket is the best investment i have made in a while. Cold midwest winters are a pain especially when walking to class. This jacket actually makes you want to go out and brave the cold. I bought this wash-in waterproofer at an sporting goods store and it helps with the water resistance. Cant beat the price at Cabelas. Get one, or freeze!!!

This down jacket is fabulous. Well made jacket with solid stitching. The jacket can be compressed down into a very small pack. Worn under a gore-tex shell and I have never been cold even when hiking in conditions where the temp has been around -25 (windchill). Bought it at Cabelas for $79. Currently, have XL (Tan/Black) and XXL (Pacific Blue/Black and Tan/Black). Highly recommend this down jacket. Wish it had the down hood like the summit.

great jacket! 700 cui is more than enough. i almost purchased an 850 cui from yeti and i'm glad i didn't. i've been from the colorado rockies to the french alps with this jacket and it's never let me down. i do recomend purchasing tnf's mountain light parka to keep you dry (made from gortex). the nuptse zips inside of the parka to make a great all weather coat. i paid $250 for both from cabela's. i have been on trips with people that have paid as high as $750 for their gear that's no better than my tnf. not much money to keep warm & dry in sub-zero weather.

This is one great jacket. I agree with the poster below, this jacket actually makes you want to go outside in the cold! It's so fun to be nice and toasty when you know all the air around you is below freezing! Remember though, this jacket tends to run small. I am usually an in-between medium/large size. I bought the Large Nuptse and it fit me just right. But if it was a little smaller, it would not be a good fit. So if you always wear large jackets, you might want to consider getting the XL Nuptse.

Well if your like me (a person who tries to get good gear for cheap because you have no money, then consider this for insulation (note on insulation, I would not use this as an outer layer unless you are in mild conditions). I like that fact that this is reasonably warm, is fairly light, and is functional, but having an insulated semi-hood would be nice. When I got mountaineering, a huge hood like on the Marmot Parbot Parka is just too big to wear over a helmet, balacalva, and have your shell hood over it, it just doesn't work. It would be nice to have an insulated hood that stows away nicely when you don't need it, that is one of the main drawbacks to it, and the fact there is not really any ventilation to it, but other than that is worth considering if your looking for a down jacket for insulation.
