This is a great jacket. Or was, it disappeared when I was at a campground. Well, someone else has a nice jacket now. I am still hoping that it miraculously shows up. IMPORTANT--My name is in it, if whoever has it reads this, would you PLEASE email me? It is blue, and it was lost at CAMP ROCKMONT, Black Mountain, NC.-- It is the best jacket I''''ve ever worn. You can''''t go wrong with this.

Waterproof, breathable, expensive. Find it on sale. Sometimes the zipper is hard to get started, but that I can live with. While it is not insulated, this may be too much jacket for hotter climates. I rarely wear rain jackets in extreme heat anyway (unless it's an absolute downpour). This product looks bomber and will hold up to some abuse.

well this is just a great parka. I'm still in high school ,so style is an issue ,it looks good ,but performs even better. I wear it about 340 days out of a 365 day year and have been on numerous backpacking trips with it and have been thoroughly pleased. its tough as nails.

This jacket is bombproof. Absolutely solid construction. Seems are well taped and stitching is perfect. The Design is great, so MANY POCKETS!! And all of the pockets are gore-tex on both sides so no worries about wet gloves getting your core wet. Pit zips are extreme as well. The hood is extremely well designed. As for the negatives....packablility is at a minimum. And it is a tad bit heavy due to the extra material for the pockets. The internal pocket, while it will hold a 1 qt Nalgene, it is rather small. Half the bottle sticks out of the top. Also, I have this random quirk that when I zip my jacket up the zipper gets stuck on the interior flap right near my chin. This is just a minor annoyance, but i have considered cutting the interior flap off. If any owners of this jacket have had similar problems, please email and suggestion to the problem.

This is an excellent climbing jacket. The first time I used the jacket I was caught in a torrential rainstorm in the Olympic Mountains last spring. The beginning of the day was sunny and I had the jacket packed away in my pack. It packs down very well for the amount of protection the jacket provides. The weather was changing constantly It went from sunny to snowing to showers. The ventilation provided through the large pit zips is great. The hood is awesome and the zippers are top quality. The jacket does not leak and provides good ventilation. Water beads off the jacket like water off a ducks back.

This is a climbing jacket and for those of you who do not wear a climbing harness the shortness of the jacket may seem to be a limitation. The breast pockets are great for warming and resting hands but does not work well for car keys and wallets because if the zipper is open things can easily fall out. The inside pocket is zipped from the side which I find weird because things can easily fall out. As a result I rarely use the jacket for an around the town jacket unless I am walking to the corner store in a rainstorm. This is probably good since my last climbing jacket, a Marmot, was stolen out of my car with my stereo. This jacket is so good I would consider using the jacket next time I go sailing instead of rubber.

The jacket has great movement and does not interfere with a climbing harness. It is simple not overly pocketed which is important when you are roped in and need to find something quickly. I would strongly suggest the jacket for mountaineering, backpacking and long day hikes in the NW but would not suggest it as an all around jacket due to the shortness of the jacket and the lack of good storage pockets.

Two of my climbing partners have the Moonstone Savage jacket. I believe this to be an even more bomb proof jacket. This jacket does not pack down as well and is tough to find on-sale. If you are planning on Denali get the Savage but if you are a weekend warrior like me (Rainer, Hood, Adams, Jefferson, Baker, etc.) the Momentum Tech is perfect.

This jacket is simply amazing. Design, fit, size everything is just fantastic. I too purchased mine at REI-outlet for ~$160-. Just one example of this jacket's amazing comfort and functionality: A few weeks ago I got stuck in the Grand Canyon hiking up from Cottonwood in an insane thunder/rain/freezing rain/HAIL storm and still had 5 miles and 4000 vertical feet to hike up to the Kaibab trailhead with 35 lbs of gear on my back. For 3 hours I was just dumped on. Worse than anything I've ever hiked in. Cords drawn in, the hood contouring my face and the body fit snuggly I emerged dry, comfortable and greatly releaved I had purchased this jacket.

GET THIS JACKET NOW!!!! STOP READING AND GET IT!!!

now that that has been said, on to the review...

You will not get wet. Ever! All the venting options you'll need, light as a feather, incredible construction, "am-I-wearing-a-hood?" hood, plenty of space for layering yet never feels bulky, dries in about 3 minutes, <1.5 lbs, very packable, ... all this and you will be the sharpest-looking joe in town as well.

now here is the best part: I bought mine for ** $158 ** and my girlfriend's for ** $108 ** at rei-outlet.com.

If I need it I will be very suprised.

Very well made jacket!! I got it half off at a local outdoor store. I had a Columbia jacket and I felt wet everytime I wore it. The lining in the Columbia would annoy me to death, especially in the sleve area. The Moonstone has no lining!! Roomy enough to wear a fleece under. I have taken it skiing and given it a nice beating. It has kept me warm and dry in snow and rain several times now!! I highly reccomend this jacket.

To clarify, I have the Women's Momentum Tech. I haven't yet worn it in any deluges, but it has served me very well in several showers (I almost crave the worst downpour, just so I can experience this parka at its best).

I have no complaints about the design, which has obviously been carefully thought out. I'm not sure if the shoulder and elbow areas are exactly reinforced as claimed, as they seem to be the same thickness as the rest of the jacket, but they are made of a different fabric (the so-called "Dynamic" 3-ply) that I assume to be stronger (as with many other features in this jacket, considerations of weight are kept in mind). The elbows are articulated without having an unneccesary number of seams that could just leak later.

As someone else mentioned, the hood is really good. I haven't tried it with a helmet, but there is a two-way elastic cord cinching system that enables a custom fit, so the hood follows the head with every movement.

The Tech has less pockets than the Expedition, only three total, but my feeling is that the only two exterior pockets means less potential leaky areas later. The outer ones are chest pockets, somewhat inconvenient for around-the-town wear, but designed with packs in mind. You can't reach side pockets when wearing a waist strap, and you probably shouldn't be using pockets on a jacket like this as handwarmers anyway (solution = gloves).

I haven't felt there was a problem with the length (maybe because I'm 5'4) nor with the smallness of the velcro tabs--again, these things make it lighter, and I have borrowed a TNF Kichatna before and felt the long velcro strip along the front plackets to be excessive.

My main concern with this is its long-term durability. This is in the realm of the materials itself, because so far I have found the construction to be impeccable.

I managed to get it for an astounding 70% off, and I think with a little looking and waiting, similar deals can be found. Try rei.com or gear.com, especially at the end of the winter season.

By the way, I have heard bad things about TNF's quality decline due to (perhaps) the meteoric rise in trendiness and demand. I hope Moonstone doesn't experience the same, since it has been bought out by (yikes) Esprit.

Customer Service

Haven't had to use it yet, but there is a full warranty against defects (for repair or replacement), and repairs due to all other causes for "a reasonable charge"
