18 years later, BMC 166 still my go to board for any snow condition anywhere from Whistler to the Poconos. If you want to take me to Europe, I'll go there too.

Only weakness I can say is that when I clipped a tree at Hunter mtn. It didn't get up and kick that trees ass for being in the way. Only got a bit of stress on the top sheet. Ride on. No weakness in the board, only the rider. Still riding it. I'm 62

This is by far my favorite snowboard. I got this board back in 2004, and it still can't compare to the ones today. This is just an overall incredible all-mountain board that never fails to deliver. Out of my collection of 4 snowboards, this is always my favorite. I really wish that Burton still made this model. Anways, great board!

I'm still riding my '02 BMC 166, and it continues to perform. I have beaten on this board season after season--everywhere from the Swiss Alps to Vermont to the Rockies to the Chilean Andes to Alaska--and it's never disappointed. It is aggressive and fast on groomers, and plows through powder and chop like none other. And, although I am by no means a pipe rider, it does a great job propelling my 6'4'', 250lb. frame off kickers, gaps, and tables. I have a size 13 foot, and this has been the only non-wide board that I have fit on without significant toe and heel drag. I wish they still made it!

I had destroyed my Ltd. LTD over four seasons and was looking for a new board. I had used a Burton Supermodel for powder, and had been happy with it until it softened up. I got the BMC because it was a high-end board, stiff, my preferred length [162] and because it is an all-mountain kind of board. [I am 5'10" and 185 lbs. without my gear on. I prefer powder, trees, steeps and never go into the park or pipe.] he first time I took it out, it totally delivered on its promise of being fast and tight. It held an edge like no other board I've ridden, and it was stable at speed. Awesome. Groomers, powder, ice, crud were all good. 20 snow days later, the board had lost a good amount of its stiffness. Edges weren't biting in like they used to, even after a full professional tune. The pop was reduced as well. It went from being stellar to being average. Also, I was not impressed by the durability either. I somehow managed to compress the sidewall in two places - not near my bindings, either. In two other spots, the edges broke. In 11 years of riding, I had never cracked an edge or compressed a sidewall on any board before then. It was bizarre! I'm glad I didn't pay full retail. It is now relegated to rock-board status, and I will look for a new, more durable ride for '05-'06. In short, this board was here for a good time, not a long time.

Stiffness, edge grip

"Graphically challenged," but if you're look at this board, but this board is about performance, not graphics.

I have taken this board out 2 times so far this year. I am a strong intermediate interested in carving, going fast while maintaining control, and challenging myself. So far the BMC has been great and I'm liking it more every time I ride. This board is no longer made, so if you see it for less than 400, I'd seriously think about getting it. This is a fairly stiff board, but I like it. If you have never taken a lesson on how to carve, I advise doing so. That's what this board is made to do, not skid. Put some muscle into your turns, get low, and take a lesson to improve your technique. This board will hold your edge at speed and is definitely fun once you figure it out. Re: delams, I was a bit hesitant to buy it after reading some of the above reviews, but it came highly recommended by a knowledgeable person. I've registered it with Burton and if anything happens, I expect them to replace it. Of course I'm not expecting it to delam. I suppose a beginner could use it, but unless you're going to be going quite a bit, this may be a bit stiff for a beginner. Also, Im' using Rossignol bindings, so you don't HAVE to use Burton Bindings.

Definitive performance for the dedicated rider.

Takes perseverance and not for the holiday rider.

I was given this board by burton when my custom delammed on me after a long season, at the time I was working as a board guide and riding everyday all season. The custom was in my mind, unquestionably the best board ever - particularly for me as a guide who needed a board to do everything and go anywhere. When I first rode the bmc I have to say that I was disappointed....but after a bit of perseverance and more importantly a tweak of the bindings to a more extreme 'duck stance' then things improved drastically and quickly! I came to realise that where as a custom lets a reasonable rider ride brilliantly and hence makes them a bit lazy that the bmc requires you to be a good rider prepared to concentrate on your riding but if you do the reward is a board that is faster and more powerful than previously imaginable! Well worth the effort if you are already a strong rider - stick with it and your riding will move to the next level. Less experienced riders should hold out a while for this board though.

best board for least price!!!! Good old burton has done it again!!! i previously had a burton twin 39 (an older one) and i was getting to big for it so i baught a bmc 62 and it was the biggest difference ive ever seen between equipment.

I found the long nose transition to be completely catch free -- no hooking the wrong edge issues. This board has "power steering" like boards that are much more noodly. I could snake it between big moguls, ckeck turn into them, or slash pivot turns on top to avoid the icy backsides. My call -- not the board's. Conversely (and this is the great thing about this board) it is not a noodle. If you want to throw a tipped up on the full edge power torque slash, the board will do it. It won't fold up or conform to the terrain if you want to push it hard. So it is stiff, but it willingly turns like a softer board. It's base is incredibly fast. Incredibly. And I'm a picky, jaded home board tuning wax geek. The dimensions of my 164w are correct -- 26 cm waist. I have no idea why so few board makers make a 26 cm waist. Most only make fatties or 25's. If you are strong and have 10.5 to 11.5 boots this is exactly the right dimensions. It has felt good in all terrain and conditions so far -- it is definitely not a park baord but thought it hit tabletops really well. Drops up to ten feet have been fine so far. The tail is pretty stiff. Very fast, tough base

Weakness 1: smallish side cut showed its upside in the turning and pow departments, but the downside is that it is a wee bit less than cat-on-velcro-like on steep (like 40 degree) icy slopes Weakness 2: In true all out, balls out bombing, the board got speed wobbles a few times! No kidding -- just like a skateboard with too-loose trucks. I guess this is the downside of smallish side cut and easy turning in general? I must repeat that it was only a few times when I was absolutely pointing is and hauling ass. And I'll be this isn't an issue for people truly good enough to responsible travel at those speeds. Weakness 3: It isn't damp. The Ying of the lively fun ride Yang's you in it turbulance when trying to plow through crud. SO the bottom line: This could be your first board if you've rented a several times. It isn't as much of a grabby plank as some of the reviews below make it out to be. You'll get good quickly on it. But I think maybe the BMC is best for those with refined skills already

First: I said "advanced" above because if you don't hit 20 foot + cliffs and ride 60+ days a year for over 5 years you aren't hardcore. I ride 20-40 days 40 degree slopes are in my comfort zone. Great board. I don't get the people that say this board is hard to control. I found it to be telepathic, very forgiving, and very easy to turn in all conditions. I rode my boots and binding relatively loose with it.
